Putting them ahead for the first time on the night, it was the last of 22 goals in an impressive first year. His memorable strike to clinch the Copa del Rey against old foes Barcelona, alongside 15 assists, ensured the Welshman made a spectacular impact at the Santiago Bernabeu following his transfer of more than €90m from Tottenham Hotspur, with a UEFA Super Cup win adding to his success.
Karim BENZEMA

    FRANCE
  • It seems an age since Karim Benzema went 1,222 minutes without notching a goal for France. That unenviable run came to a welcome end in October 2013 and since then, the Real Madrid forward has rediscovered his scoring touch on the international stage. Recognised as France’s principal attacking threat during the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil, where he inspired Les Bleus to reach the quarter-finals, he has also lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy, the UEFA Super Cup and the Copa del Rey in recent months. Second highest scorer for Los Blancos behind Cristiano Ronaldo for the fourth consecutive season in 2013/14, with 24 goals and 14 assists, the former Lyon striker has begun the 2014/15 campaign in the same productive fashion.
Diego COSTA

  • ESP
    SPAIN
  • Scorer of 36 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid in 2013/14, Diego Costa made a vital contribution to Los Colchoneros' first Spanish La Liga crown for 18 years and their run to the final of the UEFA Champions League. His speed and finishing on the counter-attack, hold-up play and ability to go toe-to-toe with even the most physical of centre-backs did not go unnoticed by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who this summer moved to take the Brazil-born Spain striker to Stamford Bridge. And though Costa has taken little time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League, his time so far with La Roja has been a different story, neither the front-man nor the rest of Vicente del Bosque’s team rising to the challenge at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. Indeed, his incorporation into Spain’s signature style remains a work in progress.

    BELGIUM
  • Winner of the Spanish La Liga’s Ricardo Zamora Trophy for the lowest goals-to-games ratio for the second year in a row, as well as the La Liga title and a UEFA Champions League runners-up medal, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois enjoyed great success with Atletico Madrid in the first half of 2014.After conceding just three goals in five matches with Belgium at the FIFA World Cup™ over the summer, the reliable shot-stopper then returned to Chelsea, where the 22-year-old has since established himself as the Blues’ starting keeper.
CRISTIANO RONALDO

  • CRISTIANO RONALDO

  • The year 2014 could not have started better for Cristiano Ronaldo, as he became the first Portuguese player to win a second FIFA Ballon d’Or. The top scorer in La Liga with 31 goals in 30 games, Ronaldo played a huge part in Real Madrid’s tenth UEFA Champions League triumph, finding the back of the net 17 times in the course of their campaign, a new record for the competition.
Angel DI MARIA

  • Though his year began slowly, Angel Di Maria became an indispensable part of Real Madrid’s attacking machine, his direct running and eye for an assist proving crucial to the club’s tenth European Cup/UEFA Champions League title. He carried his club form over to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ with Argentina, though injury would prevent him from playing any part in the semi-final or Final. Blessed with exquisite technique, Gotze is a prime example of how to play as a ‘false nine’ and regularly terrorises defences with his play between the lines. Still just 22 years old, he is impressively clinical in front of goal and does not yet appear to have reached the limits of his talent.
Eden HAZARD

  • Eden HAZARD

  • BEL
    BELGIUM
  • Named PFA Young Player of the Year and Chelsea Player of the Year at the end of the 2013/14 campaign, Eden Hazard is continuing to enhance the reputation he built when he burst onto the scene at Lille. When the incisive attacking midfielder is not using his remarkable dribbling skills to leave English Premier League defenders in his wake, he is adding to his impressive goal tally. An increasingly influential figure at Stamford Bridge and a key component in the Belgium side that reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, Hazard’s standing in the game is only likely to increase in the coming seasons.

In 2014, the 33-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker hit the net 40 times, breaking the club record for goals in a single season, finishing top scorer in France and picking up the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award for the second successive campaign. It has been a trophy-laden year for the talented Swede, who won the French League title, French League Cup and French Super Cup. In addition, ten UEFA Champions League goals saw him claim second spot in the tournament’s scoring charts behind Cristiano Ronaldo. Subsequently, in September, Ibrahimovic notched a brace against Estonia that secured his status as Sweden’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Andres INIESTA

    SPAIN
  • Though team trophies eluded Andres Iniesta in 2014, the unassuming midfielder continues to grow in stature for club and country and remains as effective as ever. While Barcelona and Spain fell short of their objectives in a year to forget, the same could not be said of the 30-year-old virtuoso.Adopting an increasingly important role for both sides as they undergo transitional phases, Iniesta has, if anything, stepped up his work rate, continually linking up with his team-mates and driving forward, but doing so in the calm, measured style that has always been his trademark.
Toni KROOS

  • Toni KROOS

His exceptional shooting technique meant he was a constant threat in the final third, as proved by the two goals and four assists he registered at the tournament. Kroos undeniably blossomed into one of the leaders of the team and following Germany’s triumph he moved from Bayern Munich to Real Madrid, where his passing and ability to control a game’s rhythm have made him an instant hit.
Philipp LAHM

  • Philipp LAHM

  • GER
    GERMANY
  • Despite Philipp Lahm now only rarely playing as a full-back, the position where he unquestionably became one of the best in the world, the Bayern Munich and Germany captain once again showcased his remarkable abilities in 2014.In his new role as a defensive central midfielder, Lahm’s performances were as flawless as they had been in the preceding years on the flanks. After winning the league and DFB Cup with his club, Lahm was an irreplaceable member of the side that lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ and his contribution to the triumph - regardless of the position he played in - cannot be underestimated. It crowned an illustrious career on the global stage, and after the tournament Lahm announced his decision to retire from international duty.
Javier MASCHERANO

  • Javier MASCHERANO

  • ARG
    ARGENTINA
  • Now firmly established as a central defender at Barcelona, Javier Mascherano was an integral figure in the Azulgrana side that in 2013/14 fought hard in the race for the Spanish La Liga title and went out in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Arguably his finest displays this year, however, came in central midfield, with El Jefecito a driving force in the Argentina team that finished runners-up at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. Those all-action performances cemented the 30-year-old’s status as an undisputed fans’ favourite in his homeland as well as smoothing the way to a new contract at Barça, where he is now in his sixth season.
Lionel MESSI

  • Lionel MESSI

  • ARG
    ARGENTINA
  • Despite the fitness problems that hampered his start to the season, Lionel Messi still managed to end the 2013/14 Spanish La Liga campaign as its second-highest scorer with 28 goals, though his contribution was not enough to secure Barcelona the title. The 26-year-old star made up for that disappointment and his club’s exit in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals by guiding Argentina to the Final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, where he scored four goals and collected the adidas Golden Ball. Fresh from that achievement, the four-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner is now gunning for the Spanish league’s all-time goalscoring record.
Thomas MUELLER

    GERMANY
  • Thomas Muller is a phenomenon. He may not be known for his technique but he has nevertheless been one of the world’s best players for a number of years.Muller demonstrated that once again in 2014 with his outstanding displays to help Bayern Munich to the league and DFB Cup titles, before crowning it all at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. There he won the adidas Silver Boot for finishing as the second highest scorer after netting five goals, and was also awarded the adidas Silver Ball by FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG) as the second best player at the tournament, in part because he covered more ground than anyone else: almost 84 kilometres. That was just one of the reasons why Muller was a key member of Germany’s triumphant campaign.

NEYMAR

  • BRA
    BRAZIL
  • Though the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ by no means had the ending he would have wished for, Brazil striker Neymar continues to grow in stature on the domestic and international stage. Currently firing on all cylinders for Barcelona at the start of his second season with the Catalan giants, the young forward also scored four goals in five appearances for his country at Brazil 2014, only for injury to force him to miss the semi-final loss to Germany. In friendly action with A Seleção, he has been in even more prolific form, notching one hat-trick and one four-goal display, the latter coming against Japan. This purple patch means that the 22-year-old is already Brazil’s fifth leading goalscorer of all time, overtaking such Seleção legends as Leonidas da Silva and Rivelino.

    FRANCE
  • “My aim is to become the best player in the world,” were among the first words stated by Paul Pogba on receiving the Hyundai Young Player award for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. And the good news is that he is on course to do just that, the French starlet having enjoyed a fine 2014. One of the rocks in a Juventus side that clinched the 2013/14 scudetto with a tally of over 100 points and reached the last four of the UEFA Europa League, the dynamic midfielder has also helped make France a global force once more – and he is still just 21...

    NETHERLANDS
  • Arjen Robben may now be into his 30s, but if 2014 has proved anything, it is that he has lost none of his speed, dynamism or match-winning ability. If anything, Robben seems to have become even more important for club and country over recent times, with the Netherlands in particular leaning increasingly heavily on a winger who is both creative and decisive. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, he was truly outstanding, with a trio of Budweiser Man of the Match awards symptomatic of a campaign that included three goals and consistently inspirational performances. Robben has also cemented his status as a Bayern Munich star over the past year, winning his third German league and cup double and prompting Pep Guardiola to declare himself "in love" with a player whose professionalism he lauds as "incredible".

Nevertheless, both Pep Guardiola and Joachim Low relied heavily on the 30-year-old, who regained his fitness shortly before the end of the season and refused to be thrown off course by another injury he sustained just before the World Cup. There, he improved with each passing game and showed in the Final just how important he is.
